Results - Rössing marathon national championship 2018

A new Namibia national marathon champion was crowned today when Tomas Rainhold of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) sport club won the Rössing Marathon National Championship in a good time of 2 hours 17 minutes and 35 seconds.

Tomas came in second in the Men’s Open category after the Zambian national Mathews Mutanya, in the fastest time of 2:16:52.

The marathon Ladies Open category was won by Anna Amutoko in 2 hours 53 minutes and 45 seconds.

Sponsored by Rio Tinto Rössing Uranium and hosted by Swakop Striders Athletics Club the event took place in Swakopmund in overcast, windless conditions from the Vineta sports fields, taking the runners on the Henties Bay road.

Today was the 27th consecutive year that the Rössing marathon national championship was hosted. The theme for this year’s Rössing marathon was “For the health of it!

The first prize in the marathon is N$10 000 each for the men’s and ladies open winners.

For the first time in the history of the event a half-marathon was hosted and well supported. The fastest runner in the men’s category of the half-marathon was Mynhardt Kauanivi from Correctional Services in a time of 1:05:49.

The first lady was Lavinia Haitope from NamPol in a time of 1:16:05. She won the Rössing marathon’s 10 km race in 2017.

This year’s event attracted a record number of participants in the marathon and 10km race while the new half-marathon attracted a more than expected number of runners. In total just more than 500 runners participated in the three events.

The first in the men’s 10 km open race was Matheus Kadhingula in a time of 30:16. The first lady in the 10 km was Salmi Nduviteko in a time of 38:58.

Around 285 walkers took part in the popular 5 km Fun Walk in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN).
