Results: Rössing Namibia Marathon Championship & 10 KM Run / Walk held on Saturday 23 February 2008

Erich Goeieman of the Walvis Bay Road Runners Club is the 2008 Rössing Namibia Marathon Champion, running the 42.2km in 2:25:57. Erich was in second place in 2007 (2:28:21) after Simon Shigwedha (2:27:16) of the Namibia Defence Force, who did not defend his title.

Four-time Marathon Champion in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006, Salomo Padrao David of the Welwitchia 77 Athletics Club, took 2nd place in a time of 2:30:52. Salomo did not participate in 2007.

In third place was Leonard Namupala in a time of 2:35:16.

Luketz Swartbooi still holds the Rössing Marathon Championship record time of 2:11:23 set in 1992.

The Ladies Open winner was Rachael Akukothela of the NDF in a time of 3:01:01, which gave her an overall sixth place in the marathon.

 

In second place was Johanna Andreas of the NDF in 3:33:29 (13th overall place). In third place was Siglinde Gontes of the Swakop Striders in 3:37:53. Siglinde took second place in the 2007 marathon.

This year's event in Swakopmund started in overcast weather, which soon changed to sunny and hot conditions for the marathon runners on the Henties Bay Road.

Thirty-two athletes in the marathon and 164 athletes in the 10km race participated in the 17th consecutive marathon sponsored by Rössing Uranium.  The race was run from the parking area below Café Anton and on to the Henties bay Road and back.

In the 10km race Frans Hosea of the NDF this year again took the first place in 30:32. He won the 2007 event in 30:17. In second place was Edwardt Kawaniui in 30:33 and in third place the well-know NDF runner Iita Reinhold in 30:54.

Beata Naigombe of Welwitchia 77 was the first lady in the 10km race in 34:55. She participated in the marathon in 2007

Rössing Uranium's Manager External Affairs, Jerome Mutumba, congratulated all the runners on their excellent performances. “You have made the most of your abilities and showed that you are fine sportsmen and women. He said that the through the event Rössing Uranium hopes to promote a healthy lifestyle among all Namibians.

“Rössing is committed to continue our sponsorship of this important event on the Namibia athletics calendar as we have done for the past 17 years. Just as Rössing is a supplier of energy to the world for more than 30 years, we would like to see ourselves as a supplier of energy in long distance running in Namibia by continued sponsorship of this event.”

A record number of 122 walkers participated in the 5km Charity Walk in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia.
