RESULTS: RÖSSING NAMIBIA MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIP & 10KM RUN / WALK held on Saturday, 28 February 2004 in Swakopmund.
(28 February 2004)

Salomo David, a member of the Welwitschia 77 Athletics Club of Windhoek is the 2004 Rössing Namibia Marathon Champion, running the 42.2km in 2:29:04. Twenty six year old Salomo's time is slightly slower than his 2001 time of 2:28:29 when he also won the Namibia Marathon Championship title.

The second place runner, Bonifatius Lazarus (Individual), came in 10 minutes later in a time of 2:39:31.

In the third place was Swakop Striders' Danny Muukua in just over three hours (3:02:59) closely followed by Jeff Bodner (3:03:16) in fourth place in the Mens Open.

The Ladies Open winner was Racher Akukothela of the Welwitschia 77 Athletic Club (2:59:48) with Cordula Möller (3:03:39) in second place. In last year's event Cordula recorded a dead heat first place (3:13:45) with Bobby-Jo Bassingthwaighte, who did not participate this year.

The fastest time of 2:11:23 set by Luketz Swartbooi in 1992 is still the Namibia Marathon Championship record. The running times of the 59 athletes in this year's marathon are good despite the event starting off in cool-misty weather with sunshine but still cool conditions towards the end of the event. The race was run from the SFC Sport Club out onto the Henties Bay road and back.

First in the 10km Run was Walter Akafingo in a time of 32:27 while last year's Namibia Marathon Champion Robert Kaxaxuena was short on his heels in a time of 32:33.

Sophia Swiegers was first in the Open Ladies event in 47:22. Julia Shimondi of Swakop Striders, still a junior, was the first lady to finish the 10km Run in 43:46.

For the first time a 10km Walk was presented with Matheas Mutota (59:11) in first place in the Men category and Tersia Visser (1:10:42) taking first in the Ladies category.

In total 114 athletes participated in the 10 km Run – Walk event.

Rössing's Managing Director, David Salisbury, congratulated all the participants. “I sincerely hope to see you all and many new runners again next year, as Rössing is committed to continue our sponsorship of this important event on the Namibia athletics calendar.”

David Salisbury, along with other Rössing employees, again participated in the 10km race this year.

For the second year a 5km Charity Walk was hosted which attracted 58 participants. The entry fees along with small donations, totalling N$1 640 was donated to the Cancer Association of Namibia. This event will again be hosted next year and it is expected to draw an increasing number of young and old entrants in support of the Cancer Association of Namibia.

Putting a bit of fun in the event gift voucher prizes were awarded for the tallest walker, shortest walker, oldest walker, best dressed walker, walker with most original hat, biggest family group participating and the most promising walker.

The Rössing Team event over 10km for Rössing employees attracted three teams.

The Rössing sponsored Namibia Marathon Championship and 10km race were organised by the Swakop Striders for the 13th year and continues to be a very popular event with a good number of entrants this year.

The runners came from the Windhoek Harriers, Swakop Striders, Welwitschia 77, Gobabis Front Runners, Hidengwa Sport Club, Walvis Bay Athletic Club, Sunshine Athletic Club, UNAM, Swakop Tri-Club and a number of individual unattached runners.
