Accident in the Open Pit

The Rössing Uranium Mine regrets to announce that a vehicle ran out of control and overturned in the Open Pit on the Mine on Friday, 27 October 2000, at about 16:30. In this accident one person lost his life and another was injured.

Rössing wishes to express its sincere condolences to the families of Japhet Aaron Gawaxab who was killed instantly in the accident and Christopher Dawid Lamperth who is being treated at the Cottage Private Hospital in Swakopmund for injuries sustained.

Their next of kin have been informed about the tragic incident.

Both Mr Gawaxab and Mr Lamperth are employed by the Okahandja based company, Colas (Pty) Ltd. The company delivers a service to the Mine on a contract basis to spray the roads in the Open Pit with a dust suppressing liquid.

In conjunction with the Namibian Chief Inspector of Mines a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident is being conducted according to the mine's strict safety standards.
