Nine-time champion Alina Armas returns to defend title at the Rössing National Marathon
Rössing Uranium proudly celebrates one of the Rössing National Marathon’s most accomplished athletes, Alina Armas, a nine-time champion whose journey with the event reflects dedication, resilience, and a deep passion for road running.
Armas first participated in the marathon in 2011, competing in the 10km race, which she won for two consecutive years. In 2013, she stepped up to the full 42.2km marathon alongside her colleagues and claimed victory in an impressive time of 2 hours and 35 minutes. It was her debut full marathon, a moment she still describes as one of the most joyful milestones of her running career, having set a personal best at one of her favourite events in the country.
“The Rössing Marathon is one of the best-organised races, and the development bonus awarded to champions makes a real difference,” said Armas. “I use it to buy training gear, support my family, and sometimes assist fellow runners who need equipment. It also helps me prepare for international competitions. In 2025, when I travelled to Japan, I bought quality gear using the support I received from Rössing.”
One of her most memorable moments came in 2016, when she and her husband both won the marathon in the same year. “That was the best experience for us as a newly married couple,” she said.
Although running has always been part of her life, Armas says she never imagined herself becoming a marathon runner. Today, the distance has become her passion.
“Road running is not easy. Discipline is key in this career, consistency and commitment will take you far. Train hard and fight easy,” she advised fellow runners.
Armas will return this year to defend her 2025 title. Having begun her training in January, she says she feels prepared for the challenge ahead.
“I am ready to defend my title. I want to wish all runners the very best — train hard, set your pace, run your race, and most importantly, have fun.”
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Rössing National Marathon, which continues to play an important role in developing athletics in Namibia while bringing together elite and recreational runners from across the country and beyond.
The 42.2km winners each receive prize money of N$20,000 and a development bonus voucher valued at N$20,000.
