Rössing Uranium Invests in Youth Empowerment

Rössing Uranium continues to champion Namibia’s future by investing in youth education and development. This week, the company proudly awarded three students the opportunity to pursue their master’s degrees in Nuclear Energy. The students Henock Hakaala, Ernos Nashidengo, and Beath Amoomo have been accepted into Harbin Engineering University (HEU) in China under the prestigious Atomic Energy Scholarship Program. They are scheduled to depart for China on 28 August 2025. All costs relating to their studies will be covered by Rössing through its majority shareholder CNUC.

At the same media briefing, Rössing Uranium also announced the selection of four exceptional learners who will participate in the Gen Z Youth Exchange Program. The selected students are Elrechia Subes (Grade 9, West Side High School), Berlize Fuls (Grade 9, Pro-Ed Academy), Benjamin Jacobus (Grade 7, Oshakati Private School), and Jeremia Nekongo (Grade 8, Oshakati Private School). These learners, all children of Rössing Uranium employees, were chosen based on their outstanding academic performance. They will join six other students from across the country on a 10-day educational excursion to China, departing on 20 September 2025. The program aims to expose them to cutting-edge scientific and technological advancements.

According to Liezl Davies, General Manager for Human Capital, Safety & Sustainability at Rössing Uranium, this initiative is a direct response to the call made by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah earlier this year during her visit to the mine, where she urged the nation to cultivate skills and prepare for a future powered by nuclear energy.

“Today, we stand as the first company to publicly respond to that call. We are not only mining uranium; we are investing in the human capital that will one day power Namibia’s nuclear future. We are proud to announce that Rössing has made arrangements with its parent company, CNUC that these bursars will further benefit from structured graduate development programs and job attachments at China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) nuclear plants, giving them hands-on experience in operating world-class facilities. This is not only an investment in their individual futures but a deliberate step in building the technical expertise Namibia needs to achieve the President’s vision,” said Davies.

Davies highlighted; “you carry not only the hopes of your families but also the aspirations of a nation. You will wear Namibia’s colours abroad, representing the potential of this great country. Your success will inspire thousands more to believe in what is possible.”

The mine shares the sentiments that from classroom to nuclear facilities, the bursars will be immersed in the technologies and practices of the future. Upon their return, they will bring back not just degrees, but the skills and confidence to contribute to Namibia’s economy. In the long run, they will join a broader talent pipeline that includes internships, job attachments, bursary schemes, and graduate development programs ensuring Namibia has the right skills at the right time.

The briefing was graced by the Erongo Region governor Nathalia /Goagoses, who encourage the two beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity. “I urge you to use this opportunity to get the country ready when the time comes. Expose yourself and when you are done, come back home and take charge of this new evolution. As a country and as the regional leadership, we are behind you and we are comforted that Rössing has availed this opportunity to empower our future leaders,” said the governor.

The governor added; “Today has not just been a celebration of bursaries and an opportunity given to expose young learners; it has been a celebration of Namibia’s future. Together, we have shown what can happen when government, industry, and international partners unite around a shared vision.”
