Rössing Uranium: A legacy of progress
Since 1976, Rössing Uranium has been a leader in Namibia’s mining industry and a key supplier to the global nuclear energy sector. As one of the world’s first large-scale uranium mines, we have played a major role in clean energy production.
Originally developed under Rio Tinto, Rössing entered a new era in 2019 when China National Uranium Corporation (CNUC) became the majority shareholder, strengthening global partnerships and advancing mining expertise.
Today, we lead in responsible uranium production, using advanced technology and sustainable mining practices. Our focus on safety, environmental stewardship, and community growth ensures lasting value for Namibia and beyond.

CNNC: Investing in Namibia’s Future
In 2019, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) acquired a majority stake in Rössing Uranium Mine, marking a new chapter in one of Namibia’s most significant mining operations.
With this acquisition, CNNC reaffirmed its commitment to keeping Rössing operational, ensuring long-term sustainability, and continuing its legacy of contributing to Namibia’s economy, workforce, and communities.
As China’s leading nuclear enterprise, CNNC drives global nuclear energy development, overseeing nuclear power generation, uranium mining, and advanced reactor technologies.
CNUC: Securing Global Uranium Supply
China National Uranium Corporation (CNUC) is part of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), one of the world’s leading nuclear energy companies. With over 60 years of experience, CNUC is a major supplier of natural uranium and plays a key role in securing fuel for nuclear power plants.
CNUC is involved in every stage of the uranium industry, from exploring and mining to processing and supplying uranium for energy production. The company is also committed to sustainable mining and has been actively supporting the long-term development of Rössing Uranium Mine in Namibia.
CNUC’s work supports CNNC’s bigger mission:
- Building nuclear power – Designs and operates nuclear power plants, including advanced reactors like small modular reactors (SMRs)
- Securing uranium supply – Manages uranium mining to ensure enough fuel for the future
- Innovating for the future – Invests in nuclear safety, waste management, and new reactor technologies
Through its leadership in uranium mining and nuclear fuel supply, CNUC remains at the forefront of global energy transformation, providing safe and efficient solutions for the future of nuclear power.
Message from CNNC/CNUC Chairperson
I hope that Rössing Uranium will intensify exploration efforts, accelerate production, and continue progressing towards the goal of building a centennial mine, making even greater contributions to Namibia’s economic and social
development.
Thank you to the concerted efforts of all employees. China National Uranium Corporation (“CNUC”) maintained a good growth momentum in 2024, with continuous increases in revenue and profits. New uranium mine development projects advanced steadily, and natural uranium sales ranked second in the world for several consecutive years. Rössing Uranium also made outstanding contributions to these achievements.
In 2024, Rössing Uranium achieved steady development and made orderly progress in production. The shutdown of the processing plant was successfully completed, laying a solid foundation for stable operation and higher production in the coming years. The Phase 4 pushback was fully implemented, with an annual total mined tonnes of approximately 30.3 million tonnes, and the Z20 supplementary exploration was successfully launched. The life-of-mine extension has taken a new and firm step forward, signalling an even brighter future for Rössing Uranium.
Meanwhile, CNUC has continued to support Rössing Uranium in actively fulfilling its social responsibilities, caring for the surrounding communities, and carrying out various social welfare initiatives through the Rössing Foundation. The Swakopmund DRC Police Station, funded by Rössing, was a focal project, effectively safeguarding the lives and property of more than 40,000 residents in the DRC community. This fully demonstrates Rössing Uranium’s commitment to community development and social stability.
As the Chairman of CNUC, I am proud of Rössing’s achievements in 2024 and sincerely thank every Rössing employee for their hard work and dedication over the past year.
The year 2025 will be designated as the “Year of Pursuit of Excellence” by CNNC, and it also marks Rössing Uranium’s 49 th year of production and operation.
I hope that Rössing Uranium will intensify exploration efforts, accelerate production, and continue progressing towards the goal of building a centennial mine, making even greater contributions to Namibia’s economic and social development.
